Don’t tickle my ears

I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

{2 Timothy 4:1-5, NASB}

There is a holy fear that comes over me when I read this passage of scripture.

I’ve been studying 2 Timothy this week, and it is stirring my soul so much. Verses three and four in particular (bolded above) have been replaying in my thoughts the last few days.

We need truth.

There is a profound need for truth today. We live in a world filled with so many lies and deceptions that if we aren’t careful, we naturally begin to take on those mannerisms as well.

It’s time to roll up our sleeves and sit down at God’s table.

The Apostle John warned against taking on the nature of this world (1 John 2:15-17). It’s easy to slip into such habits without even realizing it.

This is why we must feast on our daily Bread–the Word of God.

Hiding the Word of God in our hearts and minds is a necessity.

Would you go for weeks without eating a single bite of food? Most likely not. If anything, we gorge and fill ourselves with all sorts of earthly desires. Yet, how often do we fail to sit down to a single serving of the Word during a twenty-four hour period? I’ve been guilty of this way too much.

If we don’t read and study the Word, how can we expect to know the truth?

Do you search for truth when you have questions? Or do you rely on the sermons and Bible studies you get from church?

We need church (Hebrews 10:25). We need to hear the Word of God preached (Hebrews 10:14-17) and rightly divided. But we also need to realize that it’s time to roll up our sleeves, sit down at God’s table, and dig into the good things He has for us.

It’s time to hide His Word in our hearts.

When God calls my attention to something that needs refining within myself, it isn’t easy. In fact, if anything it’s pretty difficult. Who wants someone, let alone God, to point out flaws and weaknesses? Not me.

But if I want to learn and grow in His kingdom, I have to be willing to humble myself when He speaks to me and say, “Okay, Lord…I see. I’m sorry. Change me. Show me how to straighten my walk before You.”

I don’t want anyone to preach or teach or tell me things they think I want to hear. That’s falsehood. It isn’t real. It isn’t truth.

These are the last days. And when my Savior returns, I want to hear Him say, “My child, well done.”

I don’t want to be led astray by false doctrine or unsound teaching that is not based on God’s Word. And if that means I have to devote more time and energy into studying the Bible, then that’s what I will do. Because His Word will not return void (Isaiah 55:11).

I don’t want my ears to be tickled.

I need truth. I need the Word of God settled in my bones. I need the Word–alive, moving, shaping, and changing me into His perfect will.

Thoughts

As I sit here this morning sipping my fourth cup of coffee, I have so many things on my mind. Sometimes things cloud my vision, and if I’m not careful I fall prey to weakness during moments such as these.

The last few weeks have been trying. I’ve been dealing with things I’ve never before encountered. I am reminded on a daily basis just how important it is to hide myself at the foot of the cross. As Paul stated, dying daily (1 Corinthians 15:31) to this flesh is a must.

The second lesson I’m learning is that I cannot study or read the Bible enough.

God’s Word is sharper than any two-edged sword.

I am amazed (and saddened) at people who claim Christianity but do not feed on the Word. Lately, I’ve witnessed those who appear to be blindly agreeing with and following after words that are not Biblically sound.

It is a fearful place to tread when we take God’s Word and use it subversively or do not study it out and seek God’s wisdom and enlightenment, in order to come to the full knowledge of truth.

I don’t want to pull bits here and there from the Bible to justify man-made rules and/or beliefs. I want to study the Bible in full and have a Godly understanding and wisdom. I want to stand on the Word and know why I believe what I believe.

When I’m wrong, I pray God convicts my heart and gives me the grace to ask forgiveness and make straight my path. I don’t ever want to be so proud that I can’t say, “I’m sorry,” or humble myself to reach to others who are in need.

I refuse to be weak-kneed. I refuse to wallow in doubt.

I will stand on the Word of God. I will seek His face. I will listen for His voice.

B90Days July ’11 Session {Week 3}

Hi! I’m a little tardy in posting this video. I’ve had internet problems for a couple of months and finally got it fixed today. Yay! :) Our Group 19 is whittling down a bit. If you’re struggling, know that you are not alone. Sometimes things happen beyond our control. That’s totally understandable. I leave you with this video of encouragement for our third week of the Bible in 90 Days.

B90Days July ’11 Session {Week 2}

Quick video, for my Group 19 gals. Love you all!

If you haven’t checked in yet, today’s the day (Monday, July 18). Click here to go to Group 19 page at MomsToolbox.

Gearing up for B90Days

I wanted to prepare a face-to-face video for this, but my laptop is in the shop (a mishap with coffee!). This silly computer I’m using in the meantime is stubborn and downright uncooperative. So here I am writing a quick post instead.

I wanted to offer some three quick tips for reading the Bible in 90 days. The July 2011 session begins Monday, July 11th. So in these final days, I have these suggestions for you, if you’ll be reading with us.

#1: Pray.

I can’t stress this enough. Pray for endurance. Pray for courage. Pray for the strength to sit down and read, when you’d rather be doing something else.

#2: Schedule time to read as early in the morning/day as possible.

Creating a reading routine to begin your day really makes a difference. I found that the days I waited (or put the reading off until later), the more difficult it was too ready. You get “busy.” Read as early as possible.

#3: If you need help, ASK.

Seriously. I’m mentoring this time around (Group 19–HOLLAH!). As a B90Days, I know how important the relationship is between readers and their mentor. As a first-time mentor during this session, I want every lady in my group to know that I will be calling your name in prayer every morning. And if you ever need anything, I’m only an email away. I don’t say this lightly; it is heartfelt.

What to expect in the coming weeks

I know it’s going to get a bit overwhelming some days. As a mentor, my goal is to encourage and support you on your journey. I’ll post a weekly mentoring video here each week. Nothing fancy or elaborate. Just me, encouraging you. Why videos? Because (believe me!) you are going to have plenty enough to read. A video will give you a nice break from text for a few minutes. ;)

You can do this! Together, we will do this!

Yesterday I shared some thoughts on preparing for the Bible in 90 Days session. These should really be considered before you sign up for the reading challenge. Here are a few more thoughts regarding the challenge of reading the Bible through in such a short amount of time.

Tip #5: DO NOT attempt to do any in-depth studies during this session. This took some self-control for me the last time. Every time my curiosity was stirred, I instinctively wanted to dig deeper. Now isn’t the time for deep studies. Right now you are simply reading the Bible. Breaking the Bread. Consuming the Word.

Tip #6: Keep a small notebook to jot down scriptures that speak to you, thoughts to explore, etc. as you read. You don’t have to go buy a special book. Just grab a notepad or a cheap notebook. That’s all you need. This is something new I’ll do during this session of B90Days. (I wish I’d done it the first time.) I won’t even concern myself with dating the pages, just jotting notes and thoughts as needed. This notebook will be a great resource later!

Tip #7: If you fall behind, it’s okay. Don’t stop reading. DO NOT GIVE UP! I think that speaks for itself. ;) I promise you that if you fall behind, you won’t be the first, and certainly not the last. Don’t allow that to be an excuse to throw in the towel. Better yet, plan ahead (see Tip #2) and stick to the plan.

Tip #8: Turn to your mentor for help, support, advice, etc. The special thing about this is that Amy selects mentors for the session and creates intimate groups. Your mentor is there to support you. If you’re having a hard time adjusting to a reading schedule, find yourself falling behind, or are just having a tough time otherwise, reach out. Ask for prayer. Utilize the support system. That’s what it’s there for!

How to read the Bible in 90 days {Part 1}

Reading the Bible in 90 days is no simple feat. It will most likely be one of the most challenging tasks you undertake. And one of the most rewarding.

Tip #1: Begin with prayer. Before you even sign up to join the upcoming session of B90Days, pray about it. Ask God to help you. Seek direction.

Tip #2: Decide the best time of day to read. Then stick to it. This reading plan does require daily time commitment. Some can read their daily portion in as little as 20 minutes, but others require up to an hour or two. Better to plan for more time than you might need, than to fall short and end up frustrated because you can’t complete the readings every day.

Tip #3: Ask yourself the question, ‘Why do I want to read the Bible in 90 days?’ When you have a purpose and intention, you are more likely to follow the plan through to completion. For me, during the last session my main purpose was simply to read the Bible through from cover to cover. It was something I’d never done. During this session, my purpose is different. What is your purpose? Keeping this in mind will help you on the days you’re finding it rough to stick to the plan.

Tip #4: Don’t get sidetracked. There are lots of distractions that can sidetrack you. Be cautious and constantly aware of how you’re spending your time. Forget about Twitter and Facebook. And blogs. Let the Word come first every day and I promise you, you will be amazed at how much more time you seem to have.

More tips tomorrow!
